Upcoming film depicts the battle between Ford and Ferrari at Le Mans
I can’t tell you the last time I’ve been to the movie theater. As a fan of classic films, and an obsessive car guy, there’s just not much for me in the box office world of Star Wars, Disney and whatever super hero film everyone is raving about at the time. But every so often, the movie moguls turn their attention to the sports car world, and feature one of the hundreds of larger-than-life stories we car guys treasure.
The latest one has us in a tizzy, as it covers one of the most revered American stories in sports car racing. Hitting the theaters on November 15, Ford V. Ferrari covers the exciting and action-packed 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race and the dramatic events that preceded it.
The date for the film came buried in a list of upcoming film releases from Disney’s acquisition of Fox film studios. Amongst usual blasé titles like Avatar and Star Wars, and a host of traditional Disney films, the title Ford V. Ferrari sticks out, even if it’ a little matter-of-fact.
But that’s enough to get our gears turning based on what else we know about the upcoming film. The star-studded cast shows promise for the film, and there’s not much to disagree with here. Matt Damon will play Carroll Shelby, and Lee Iacocca will be played by Jon Bernthal of The Punisher and The Walking Dead (but more importantly Fury, in my opinion). We’re also excited to see Christian Bale of The Dark Knight and Public Enemies as Ken Miles, an important role in the film given Ken's dedication to the GT program and the infamous 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans. The film is directed by James Mangold, known for the X-Men final chapter Logan.
The weight of the film means that we'll likely trade an evening in the garage for a movie theater seat — an event that rarely happens. In fact, the last time I went to the theater on my own accord was to see Rush (2013), a film about the fierce rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Five years later, I'd say we're due for a quality car-guy film.
