While our November/December issue’s cover feature highlights a reproduction of the legendary Scarab, it’s a high-performance street version, and the original was really built for competition. And compete it did, especially when driven by Augie Pabst, Jr. In 1959, the Peter Hand Brewing Co. acquired two Scarabs, and hired Pabst to drive one of them. He went on to win the United States Auto Club’s National Road Racing Championship handily in 1959, and became national champion in the Sports Car Club of America’s B-Modified Class, among other racing achievements.

As a tribute to this epic era of competition, Scarab Motorsports is building a series of limited-edition Meister Brauser MKII reproductions, outfitted just like the original as it was raced by the Meister Brauser race team in the late ’50s and early ’60s. It has original-style drum brakes, a de Dion rear suspension, magnesium wheels with Dow 7 coating, custom brass radiator, correct 339-cubic-inch Chevy engine with Lehman front-drive unit, and many other original components sourced and/or recreated specifically for this car. The series is limited to a total of 20 cars, of which 18 are still available. The Meister Brauser shown here is being offered at $375,000 by Integrace Motors, the U.S. distributor for both the standard and limited-edition Scarabs.     

In addition, Scarab Motorsports is producing limited editions representing the first left-hand-drive RAI Scarab MKI as built by Reventlow Automobiles Inc., and the right-hand-drive Nickey Chevrolet Scarab MKII as produced by the Nickey Chevrolet group of Chicago.
