Caterham Seven Sprint
The original Lotus Seven turns 60 next year, and to celebrate, Caterham released a new model. But at just 80 hp, the Seven Sprint may not be what you were expecting.
Caterham has been producing Sevens since 1973, and it’s pretty safe to say they've perfected it. But perfection and high performance comes with a higher price tag, evident from the nearly $100,000 a 620R can cost stateside.
Caterham seems to have heard your pleas, and instead of offering a special edition, even more maniacal 620R, they’ve released a sensible retro-themed Seven Sprint. Complete with painted steel wheels with hubcaps and a choice of six vintage paint shades, the Sprint harkens back to a time when the Seven was the affordable, everyman’s British sports car. Classic-looking red interior panels and wood steering wheel accent the interior, while the exterior is finished off with a polished exhaust and retro-inspired lighting. The aforementioned 80 hp power plant is a Suzuki three-cylinder with a turbocharger boosting the 660 cc unit from its original 64 hp setup.
If the Seven Sprint sounds like the affordable fun weekend driver you’ve been looking for, don't get too excited. You cannot actually buy one, as all 60 examples Caterham is building were spoken for within seven days ... and not a single one is bound for the United States. Bummer. However, we’re fairly certain that $37,000 will buy a classic Seven on the used market or a brand new 280 with a few extra ponies.
