Nearly 25 years ago, ReinCarNation magazine editor Steve Temple got behind the wheel of a new Mustang-derived Cobra kit built by the newly formed Factory Five Racing. The editor for Kit Car magazine at the time, Steve reviewed the FFR MkI favorably, and has since documented countless Factory Five Cobras across multiple titles.
Factory Five has come a long way since 1995, and so has its product line. The company offers a range of component vehicles today, but their bread and butter has always been their DIY Cobra roadster kits. To celebrate the success of their products and 25 years in business, Factory Five has just pulled the cover off a brand new 25th Anniversary Edition Mk4 Roadster packed with custom features and options.
It all starts with the chassis, and the new 25th Anniversary car receives an exclusive bronze-metallic powder-coated chassis, a motif that carries over to other parts of the car as well. The aluminum panels which make up the footboxes, wheel wells and other areas are then powder-coated black to complement the chassis treatment.
To get the company’s best handling package, FFR’s independent rear suspension is included on all anniversary cars, along with KONI double-adjustable shocks and sway bars front and rear. Premium Wilwood brakes are also included as standard, featuring drilled and slotted, 13-inch rotors. Calipers consist of six-piston units up front, and dual-piston units in the rear, both bearing 25th anniversary logos.
Probably the most dramatic feature included on the car, are the new 18-inch Sunburst wheels. Sized 18 x 9-inches up front, and 18 x 11-inches in the rear, the wheels are a two-piece forged design in the same bronze finish. (Customers can also substitute 17 or 18-inch Halibrand-style wheels as well.)
Things get even more interesting in the interior, where nearly every major component is unique to the 25th Anniversary car. Seats are upholstered in black leather with bronze diamond stitching, and include black 25th anniversary logos as well. Custom Speedhut gauges feature unique gauge faces, and the set includes a GPS speedometer. A carbon fiber dashboard and glovebox is a lightweight and exotic addition, and the wood-rimmed steering wheel includes a 25th anniversary logo as well.
Special polished brightwork and anniversary logos provide the finishing exterior treatments, and the final product is teeming with attitude. A run of 25 cars is slotted for production, but the latest word was that only three cars remain unspoken for. The very first 25th Anniversary car was delivered to the Ohio Cobra Club and will be the 2020 auction car to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
