Forged and Carbon-Fiber Rims
By Steve Temple
Forgeline Motorsports has a new line of two-piece carbon-fiber and forged aluminum, ultrahigh-performance wheels by working with Emergent Carbon Wheels. The Carbon+Forged Series combines weight-optimized, CNC-machined forged aluminum centers with Emergent’s innovative carbon-fiber barrels. These barrels use a high-density carbon-fiber bundle, a high-clarity resin system and an unusually large carbon weave pattern. These high-tech characteristics create rims that are not only visually distinctive, but also 42 percent lighter than equivalent aluminum wheels. This weight reduction is achieved in the wheel’s critical outer perimeter, where the greatest reduction in unwanted inertia is achieved for real-world improvements in acceleration, braking, cornering, ride quality, NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), driver and passenger comfort and an increase in fuel economy.
These new wheels are engineered and tested to deliver industry-leading levels of fatigue strength, impact and damage resistance, and deflection stiffness. Tested by an independent automotive industry laboratory, they are said to exceed all existing SAE and TUV test specifications, and surpass the AK-LH 08 Radial Impact Test standard.
The first wheels to be released from Forgeline’s new Carbon+Forged Series are the lightweight, racing-inspired CF201 (featuring a five V-spoke design and aggressive I-beam machining details) and the high-style CF202 (featuring a unique directional split-5 spoke design). Available in 20- and 21-inch fitments, both wheels are ideal for an array of exotic sports cars.
